Dear Friends & Meditators,
We will be among the wisest and most beneficial of friends this evening. Those who support us in our Standing Meditation practice. In Standing Meditation, one stands as long as they like, then sits. (3, 5, 15 minutes - it doesn't matter.) Understanding the good qualities & rewards that can come from change, breaking out of the norm, and trying something new and perhaps difficult (and much more - see below). Throughout the day we find ourselves in four basic postures: sitting, standing, walking, lying down. Funny how these are the four formal meditation poses. Practicing meditation in this way gives us the tools to work with to prevent difficulties from arising. Why do we learn standing meditation? As mentioned, many times in our daily life we find ourself standing - on a bus, at an ATM, buying tickets, at an airport, on a subway platform and so forth. In this meditation, we are building mindfulness, awareness. It gets heightened and we have a deeper understanding of ourselves. What may come up when we're standing in daily life? Possibly boredom, impatience, aversion and so forth which can disrupt our mental peace. By practicing standing meditation and bringing the mindfulness and awareness into the forefront we can often prevent these unwise reactions and mind-spins from occurring. We can actually turn it around and use these standing opportunities as a way of bringing more serenity into our life. The formal practice is like sharpening the stone to more easily bring about the awareness in our life in order to prevent the difficulties. Stand as long as you wish, then when it is too uncomfortable at any point, finish the rest of the period in the normal sitting posture. It will be an honor to see you this evening! Warmest Regards, ~Robert Please RSVP here: http://meditation.mee... (Helpful but not required. We meet at 7:45pm and enter the room at 8pm - please be early or on-time.) |
