Meditation with a group of people and meditation alone each have their benefits. I encourage anyone interested in meditation to include both in their practice. In addition to my private meditation, I also meet with a small group on Monday evenings.
“ It is really quite amazing to meet other people who are familiar with Daoism or the Yi Jing. Yet over the past year I have met people who are not only familiar with Daoist writings and the Yi Jing, but are serious in their study, and attempting to apply Daoist ideas to their own lives. I enjoy the convivial spirit within the group. Since we meet around a table set for tea (and sometimes some yummy noodles), the mood is more like a group of friends around a dinner table. This casual setting helps to keep the discussion less abstract or ideological and more personal. The insights that people contribute are their own, and not simply something they have read from a book. At the same time, I find it very useful to have paper and pen at hand, because I want to capture what was said. Although we have planned topics, I do not want our meetings to degenerate into lectures, but instead keep the spirit of friends sharing with each other what they have found. ”
“ Tonight in particular I detected a great deal of enthusiasm among the people who were present. I heard several of my new friends describe a new (or renewed) commitment to mindful practice. This is quite encouraging. May the time that I spend in meditation, and my own practice of mindful living also be a support for them. ”
“ I am pleased with how our Yi Jing Meetup group is developing. We have a good variety of perspectives and different approaches to the Yi Jing. We share a respect and affection for this great work. At our February Meetup event I expressed a desire to acquire greater fluency with the images and symbols of the Yi Jing, so that the sixty-four hexagrams would at all times be "dancing within my head." The dynamics of this group help me to be more diligent and regular in my study. The influences coming from the other members of the group help me to see aspects of the Yi Jing that I may not have observed or appreciated, had I been left to my own private investigation and interpretation. ”
